Re: Antivirus?

Avast here. Not great, but decent. Panda's detection seemed better, but I prefer local heuristic scanning as opposed to cloud-based scans (bandwidth). And, if you use multiple computers, Avast for Business is free. In addition to the desktop app, it provides a web-based central management console, w...

Re: Windows Update fail

I had the same problem on an old laptop yesterday.

Got around the ridiculousness by using a 3rd party tool called Windows Update Offline Installer:
http://download.wsusoffline.net/

It worked great. Maybe it could help you, too.

Thanks!

Yeah. TFS is a horrid lump of WTF. The sad thing is, most MS shops, at least here around Denver, are using it. Hope that stops soon.

git or Mercurial. I like both. They're free. For repo cloud hosting: github.com is nice, but so is bitbucket.org. Yeah, try not to keep files you don't need versioned. Isolate them somewhere else, especially large files. Could you use cloud file sharing like Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive for tha...

UE4 does not have native P2P support. Descendant Studios would have to build an implementation into UE4 on their own.

P2P is on the UE4 roadmap, marked under 'Wishlist/Backlog', with 180 votes so far; go vote!

I received word that JinX passed away on Monday, the night of March 3rd. No details beyond that. Sean and I worked on some programming projects together. He was a super smart guy and fun to joke around with. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends. Rest in pea...

Re: USB Converter for MS Sidewinder 3DPro, PP, and FFP

I have a [really dumb] question. I went through the threads and couldn't find it, but I apologize if it's on here somewhere. Does the adapter only provide a DirectInput interface for Windows? Or does it [also?] provide an XInput interface? If not, would something like this be possible? I don't know ...

I've created a tool to join d1x:// and d2x:// URLs

I've created a Windows utility that should register these protocols so you can join games from your browser (or other apps). Syntax: d1x://ip:port d2x://ip:port Note: it uses Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0. http://www.descentrangers.com/DxxBrowserLauncherSetup.1.2.zip Clarification: joining ga...

Howdy, Hoping some Linux gurus might be able to help. I'm trying to install a new copy of Smoothwall on to a box that was running Smoothwall for years. I get through setup okay until it partitions my hard drive. It says "Unable to create boot partition". I discovered it is trying to partit...

It's a shame that one of your locations blocks ssh traffic, because IMO it's the best solution. Is there any chance that you could petition to the network manager to have it un-blocked? Haha, I wish. One day I found a server that wasn't being monitored, and I needed to restart Apache on a remote se...

VPN server?

Okay, so, I would like to setup a VPN server at home, but I need to be able to specify the port it is running on (which cuts out your basic "incoming connection" setup in Winblows). I checked out Monowall and scrapped it thanks to installation frustration (USB problems). I then tried Zeros...
