Re: A Few Questions about Textures

I can confirm this. GIMP does let you save to most popular formats that are in use today. The only thing that makes it slightly counter-intuitive is the fact that it requires you to use the "export" option further down on the list in order to do so. "Save as" always saves to GIMP's native xcf format.

Re: Impressions on Descent: Insane, cold start, no-death, 100%

Puuma Sphere is a great system for sure, it's also rather brightly lit though. Still, its whites and bright greens wouldn't work that well with low lighting levels I suppose.

Re: Question About Obtaining Alternate Missions

If you play Descent 1 through DOSBox, then no "missions" folder is necessary, the game reads everything from the same folder the application is in.

Re: Impressions on Descent: Insane, cold start, no-death, 100%

Level 14: This level's an interesting one for many reasons. Not very difficult, and yet I found myself failing many times right before the exit or inside the reactor chamber. Quite annoying in all honesty. Parts of the geometry are slightly reminescent of the second secret level from D1, which I lik...

Re: Descent 1 1/2

I'm adding in a new explorable red key area, as well as another secret, depending on what I can fit. I'm not sure I'm lacking for secrets, since I'm up to 7 (or 8, can't remember since I'm not at home), and in looking at some Uranus D1 levels for texture reference, level 22 only has 6 secrets unles...

Yeah, you need STIF too, but it appears to be included in the package. Maybe use the REG files to add registry entries? They're found in the Shell subdirectory.

Re: Lou Guards vs Super Medium Hulks

As far as I know, robot data in D1 is stored in descent.pig. Haxmed32 doesn't let you access that, it only works with descent2.ham. The only way to read D1 robot data is to see the source code (most probably). Haxmed32 itself is rather limited, it doesn't support creating new item and robot classes ...

Re: Lou Guards vs Super Medium Hulks

I only assumed that in D1 red hulks used player homers, simply because of the damage. They definitely use robot homers in D2, same as Lou Guards. That's why I'm confused as to why they do 43 damage in 1 and only 26 in 2. I though if the two games' codebases were getting unified for Rebirth, there wo...

I'm using the nightlies currently, but the same issue persists under dosbox, so it's not a Rebirth thing. I think I used a dmtools installer way back when, anyway my haxmed32 does work. Ehh so I guess we'll just leave things as they are. We can compensate by stuffing twice as many super hulks as there were in D1 xDDDDDD

I'll also ask around on the DXX boards, plenty of coders there so they might know what's up

Re: Lou Guards vs Super Medium Hulks

I did some tests and the results confuse me, to say the least - they make no sense at all. First off, the player homing missile is just as good as it was in D1, if not better. In D1 it would take 6 homers to blow up a super hulk, in D2 it takes 5. That would suggest they've actually become stronger ...

Lou Guards vs Super Medium Hulks

Ok, so playing Descent 2 a bit recently brought something to my attention. Namely, the Lou Guards are pitifully weak compared to D1's viral juggernauts the red hulks. It's not just due to their difference in stats, which are superior for the hulk in terms of both endurance and aggression, but due to...

Re: D2 L14 ice spindle traps in the floor near the red door

A nice piece of trivia. BTW that level's easy, I failed my last attempt because I didn't get the way to the exit open - you need to get to the blue key from above to trigger the appropriate walls opening. I'd cal it bad level design. More after I actually beat the level.

D2 L14 ice spindle traps in the floor near the red door

I've noticed that there are two traps in level 14 on the way to the red door which do show in the full map, but they never open up, as there is no trigger for them. Design oversight?

Only 16-bit applications require that the system isn't 64-bit. 32-bit apps can be run just fine on 64-bit systems, and Haxmed32 is one, it's even in the name :D The change you need to make to its files in order to be able to make changes to descent2.hog is this: in the DATA directory of the applicat...

Re: Descent 1 1/2

In your version of the POG the dark green brick texture is under rock340 at the moment. I don't see the brighter one. There is no door, but since this kind of door has 7 frames, door20 is a good choice for replacing, you can just do it frame by frame. I'd really like to see some of these textures in...

The camping strategy for the boss (that Calmarius used and I tried to use it too, but did it the other way in my vid, because of the boss glitch) allows for more than 50% success rate, and you can always hear when the boss teleports nearby and safely drive it away with guided or smart missile.
