Any recommendation of a good synthesizer (perhaps whete can I get yours too)? I did install a soundfont for DosBOX, but it made no difference in Rebirth or Media Player.

I've always been able to have good midi music (much better than DosBOX) in Rebirth out of the box with no problem. What errors do you get?

Outside of Descent (if exporting the midi) I believe I just use Windows Media Player.

Maybe a 'proper' solo version of AF will be made, not that anything is actually wrong or 'improper' as is, but proper meaning as in supporting all the traditional solo play game styles.

I think Xfing is right with how he compares the two. I've been doing videos from DooM lately (on YouTube) but when I do play Descent I try to record it as well, just put up videos of what I'm playing. As for this thread's topic...sounds like Level 10 must have been a real, no questions asked nightma...

Bahagad was already made for SP as far as I know (it's not like AF). And LL seems to be a step up in design perhaps, too.

I wonder how Kragg System stands up, another older DFW D2 map. You can watch on YT and/or get it on Scorch's Den.

^Yeah, Brimspark fatigue at its finest...Doing four massive levels in a row with almost identical textures wasn't really a good idea, IMO. At least other units have one or two levels that aren't as big.

Where are you generally taking big hits to your health (or running out out of energy with no center being reachable)? I doubt this level is even the hardest, it's only Level 10 after all. A lot of missions lack a high-difficulty walkthrough. I think the major ones Calmarius did like TEW and the original Vignettes for D1 set are actually more an exception than a rule. I don't know about D2 part (haven't played it), but D3 part is much smaller and is different from anything you've seen non-XL. In the split version, it is Level 3. It is not designed to be cold started, however

ZDooM is great. I don't see why there's any reason to attack it. Way less potential bugs and much easier to keep it almost perfectly faithful. Not a good choice IMO of a port with similar issues to XL, not by a long shot.

Unlike Rebirth, XL has many modifications and allows many new features to be added the classic Descent experience. Yet my impressions with it have been mixed - I always like the classic experience, and I often prefer Rebirth or even Dos as a result. How do you think XL compares to the more 'classic'...

The green homing robot is really tough for me, it will fire four at once even on Hotshot. And it has an energy pulse. Very hard when I do no Gauss runs. It's even worse than a Boarshead. Only the MAX that appears in LL without the weapons mod is worse.

I don't think I've ever seen a D2 mission that isn't easy on Trainee. It's super-nerfed (try even Rookie to compare). How is AF on a higher difficulty? Raw recording is much bigger (often >1 GB beyond 15 min or so). But with compression (VirtualDubMod) I got it down to ~220 MB for ~22 min. I don't know if Krom is referring to uncompressed or compressed size being good, but by extrapolation, if it was an hour I'd expect ~600-800MB. It's not 1920x108...

I just saw that and edited my post above to show that.

But as I say, not everyone is going to fly through immediately. Some people are likely to think to retreat right away and snipe before flying through. That is what I did, and my punishment? A cold start.

Try flying over the trigger to open it, then immediately flying back, letting it close, and then try to shoot or bump into it. That's what I did. At any point if I go back into the second room and the door closes again behind me, I'm stuck.

The fly through trigger that opens the door only works once. In D1, it worked repeatedly.

Basically what the title says. This could be referring to actual D1 custom levels (First Strike itself is excluded from consideration here), or to D2 custom levels that use all or almost all D1 robots (Cascade Aquaduct is a recent example of one). Not for me - it can steal three primaries at a time, usually but not always including the one I have selected.

This is a total game-breaker as it makes the Thief ridiculously potent. Basically you're at 'Threat: Extreme' instead of 'Threat: Moderate'.

What brightness bug? Dos blinds you 100% for about 2 seconds with single hit while Rebirth caps at about 85% blinding (these are both results on Hotshot). Which is the correct behavior based on the original D2 exe?

Flash missiles

Are flash missiles from robots in D2 supposed to blind you 100% with a single hit, for about two seconds? They do for me in Dos, at least at Hotshot or above, but not in all source ports. I'm wondering if DosBOX might have an issue handling flash missile hits or if Dos is doing it right.

D2X-XL is a lot less like classic than Rebirth. But Anthoology, Dimensional Intersect, and Black Prophecy XL are worth trying for it. @AlexanderBorisov The first two levels give me a harder time as well. My best bet is Vulcan with all those 'light' robots at least until I find the Missile Launcher in a secret on Level 2. Gets easier for me past that, but I'm only playing Hotshot so AI is less. Phoenix is a pretty high power weapon...
