Just built a similar system...

A64 3000+ ($125 )
Asus K8v deluxe ($68 ) <-- onboard LAN, Sound and IEEE1394
2x512MB corsair XMS pro DDR400 CAS2 ($150 ) screw value ram

$343 grand total, but RAM is where I HAD to have it. could have saved $74 had I gone with 512MB

guess the topic sums it up.

I just picked up a samsung flat panel display and it has both DVI and VGA inputs. which is better?

I have both outputs on my video card, so the only thing I need to do is buy an extra cable if it's worth it.

low 5's I wouldn't worry about FJ :) we had 3 quakes in so cal over the course of 5 days (bout a month ago IIRC) All were 5-6 and I still don't worry about the "big one" that's supposed to drop LA into the ocean :)
