Yeah, the upgrades are spotty at best these days, not like upgrading from 95 to 98 was. You would be better off using the Windows 7 setup to format the drive and run a new install. Process explorer by sysinternals will identify what processes are connected to. Don't remember how/where I got it sorry.

Whatever's out there, new and old.

HP is the manufacturer... I know some don't like HP, but I have two dv9000 series now for 2-3 years with no problems. Just getting a bit dated for newer games.
