I just saw that and edited my post above to show that.

But as I say, not everyone is going to fly through immediately. Some people are likely to think to retreat right away and snipe before flying through. That is what I did, and my punishment? A cold start.

Try flying over the trigger to open it, then immediately flying back, letting it close, and then try to shoot or bump into it. That's what I did. A lot of people could do this as they try to snipe the enemies in the room beyond rather than flying in. As for the other part, you're right; once you act...

At any point if I go back into the second room and the door closes again behind me, I'm stuck.

The fly through trigger that opens the door only works once. In D1, it worked repeatedly.

Do D1 bots only inherently make a level/mission more bland?

Basically what the title says. This could be referring to actual D1 custom levels (First Strike itself is excluded from consideration here), or to D2 custom levels that use all or almost all D1 robots (Cascade Aquaduct is a recent example of one). Any commentary to go with the poll here is welcome. :)

Not for me - it can steal three primaries at a time, usually but not always including the one I have selected.

This is a total game-breaker as it makes the Thief ridiculously potent. Basically you're at 'Threat: Extreme' instead of 'Threat: Moderate'.

What brightness bug? Dos blinds you 100% for about 2 seconds with single hit while Rebirth caps at about 85% blinding (these are both results on Hotshot). Which is the correct behavior based on the original D2 exe?

It turns out Anthology Split has a major bug as well - the Class 1 Drone robots fire Phoenix Cannon right off the bat (second room in Level 1!) instead of their normal weak weapons! Flash missiles

Are flash missiles from robots in D2 supposed to blind you 100% with a single hit, for about two seconds? They do for me in Dos, at least at Hotshot or above, but not in all source ports. I'm wondering if DosBOX might have an issue handling flash missile hits or if Dos is doing it right.

D2X-XL is a lot less like classic than Rebirth. But Anthoology, Dimensional Intersect, and Black Prophecy XL are worth trying for it. Rebirth isn't as pure as Dos and doesn't seem to have as good of an RNG. Robots may seem to drop power ups too much making it easier.

So they're not teasing when they say Infestation: Extreme? Usually I wouldn't expect the first level in a cluster to be one of the hardest.

What's your favorite level in this cluster and your favorite in the set as a whole?

Well with D1 primaries only except in extreme conditions (and Level 5 laser allowed) it is either Vulcan or Plasma.

Usually even infinite save no death is tougher than I want. That's why I prefer limited deaths with (limited) saving only on my last life or in extremely hard areas. Can you get past the first few on Level 7, Hotshot, cold start, no Gauss, hit no more than once or twice?

(You even get a Vulcan and a Super Laser upgrade right away with an energy center in the second room.)

The biggest thing I like about cold start is to always begin a level with no score and only two lives. If I accumulate too many lives it is too easy. If I go entirely no death it's often too hard. I play Hotshot cold start no save unless either I'm on my last life or there is a particularly hard encounter that I'm engaged in.
