I'm aware of the distinction, but not the differences. I use Zico's current verison of D1X, mantained on his site. At the moment, I'm not running Descent 2 at all.

I think it goes something like this:
Descent 1 v1.5 -> D1X (up to v1.42 I think) -> D1X-Rebirth
Descent 2 v1.2 -> D2X (up to v0.25/v0.26 beta) -> (fork) D2X-XL/D2X-Rebirth

I'm not 100% sure whether there has been any merging going on between the D1 and D2 branches of Rebirth though. Might have been. Early D2X may also have borrowed some code from D1X, but I'm not sure about that either.

As far as I can tell, one of the biggest differences between the original D1x-D2x and the newer Rebirth is the hit zone. I think somewhere down the line, Zico made the the hitzone smaller or better said more accurate. IE: you actually have to hit what your aiming at, and not just be close. I could be wrong but because of this, I think the original D1x delivers more splash damage than a fusion shot from Rebirth does.

As far as the netcode is concerned. I see half as many dropped shots when playing against Rebirth players as I do when flying against legacy players.

Tank. It's a no-brainer. Tri-Fusion, heavier armament and smaller hitzone. It can camp against any ship. The others are ight except the BP. The BP is gay and everyone who flys them is too.
