every time I run d3, I notice several frames are skipped, and when that happens, things look \"jumpy.\" what gives?

running Windows XP SP3

Direct3D

Run it on opengl, and try using -framecap 0 in the command line area, if you're using a joystick.
If that doesn't work come back

Whenever I've seen that, it's because of other processes consuming cpu time. I'd run some virus/malware/adware checks, if nothing else seems to work.

I already scanned for malware.

D3 doesn't work right under open gl on modern processors. The screen always goes black after the round is over or when I alt-tab out of the game, and when it does run under OpenGL, it's kinda choppy.

That's a known bug in NVidia's GL drivers. It started happening with their v183 driverset a few years ago.

Works fine with ATI cards/drivers. The only way to avoid it with an NVidia card is to go back to pre-183 NVidia drivers, or set your game resolution to 640x480.

Most people get better performance (e.g. higher framerates) under OpenGL.

If that's not the case for you, I highly suggest checking and/or reinstalling your drivers.

This is exactly why I run it under Direct3D. High framerates cause multiple problems for me in D3 (and I don't really care about fixing it, I get a lot of cool graphical effects in Direct3D that I don't get in OpenGL anyway).

When I run D3 I have to stop Windows Update and TrustedInstaller, and set my antivirus to silent mode (even when I was using OpenGL).

I saw an old post on the TrackMania forums with a program that shuts down unnecessary backround processes while you're playing games, I'll have a look there and see if I can find that post again.

Yeah that program is called game booster.

What's with the youtube links? Can you guys at least put the reason for posting youtube links in your posts?

I guess there is nothing else I can do except reinstall the same drivers.

You need to get your facts right, also the original program is called 'Process Killer' everything else is a copy of it.

Days into this Post 'Busted/Blaze" and we still do not have your specs

I suppose you've tried it and it didn't help?

That makes it seem to me that your problem isn't background processes, but I'm no expert, and I don't know what everyone else thinks.

I've already used that before, but I don't need to do anything like that.

If you two won't write what those youtube links are, then can you stop spamming them in my thread?

Thanks for the tip, but I already figured that out several days ago from the real replies before you stated the obvious.

You still don't have my specs because you never asked me for them, idiot.

Calling people an idiot is no way to get help.

I didn't call anyone an idiot except bubba, because all he does is assume anyone new is someone he doesn't like and belittle others even when they ask for help.

hey blaze?

not a good idea to call someone an idiot and then try and shift the blame. gets your thread closed real fast.

IBTL!

You want real help? Try posting it in the right forum next time and post more complete system specs (processor, memory, video card, hdd space).

Have you tried the -lowmem or -superlowmem command line options and looked for an improvement in smoothness?

Don't worry. Last time I played it was still choppy, but I can't remember the game remaining that way, and I totally 0wned face. =) When I said I "figured that out" days before, I was referring to what you said: "you need to get your facts straight" but without malice. Seems like you thought that I wasn't going to post the results of testing a solution.
