Proof, they're both vampires!

Vlad! Putin even has an appropriate vampire's name.

Vlad is Vladislav, not Vladimir. These are completely different names. The same as Tunnelcat not Tunnelfox :)

I just shortened Vladimir to Vlad to keep with the vampire theme Issac started and because of the origin of the name for Count Dracula, which came from this nice guy. In fact, I think Vlad the Impaler was a nastier person than any fictional vampire could have ever been.

Just some of the names is almost impossible to cut without creating confusion.

TC, I know that Americans love cuts.
OK, especially for you.
The literal translation of the name of Vladimir in the English language is "Worldowner".
If you really want, the best shortened version of the name Vladimir will be Vovk ( Victor Oscar Victor Kilo Alfa)
For the Russian people this cut name will sound in a familiar way and friendly.
As for the Americans - Yankee.
Of course, this short name can be used only in an very informal setting

How we shorten names in English is obviously different from Russian. Besides, English is a really weird bastard language that came from a mix of other older languages, with all sorts of syntax violations and grammar conflicts anyway. You sometimes have to memorize a particular way of doing or saying things instead of trying to follow whatever arbitrary rules the language is supposed to conform to anyway.

sigma, you do realize that since Vladimir means "Worldowner", that will make most American's now think of Putin as a power hungry despot who wants to rule the world.

Well, I think I will not be mistaken if I say that in Russia men named Vladimir more than a million :)

P.S. By the way, I can tell you a Russian name which will correspond to your real name.
