Cross Poster - SHOOT LEVEL Updates

I will take the time to update the d3 levels with good download paths/urls.

I ask that everyone list the known archives and also email me any server ops email addresses you may have so that we can co-ordinate this effort throughout the community.

What I'm hoping to accomplish is a major overhaul of the d3 levels. I was hoping with the servers and major archive sites would support this effort to inhance peoples ability to join a game.

After being away for a few years and losing all my stuff I had to start from scratch and the terrible disarry of the auto-download situation is horrible.

I'll spend the time if you guys will replace your files!

Here are the current archive listed ...

ftp://ftp.pooterman.com/descent3/levels/
http://www.dfiles.de/download/d3/missions/
http://www.levels4you.com/d3levels/
http://www.descent3fischlein.de/levels/
http://www.planetdescent.com/site/files/d3/
http://www.descent3fischlein.de/levels/

I think it might just be the servers themselves that can make the biggest impact on this situation.

What say you any takers?

They aren't.

DFiles.de belogs to Skorpion and
Descent3Fischlein.de is from Fischlein.

Different People, Different Servers.

Cheers.

erm koolbear.

let me check, if I understood that right:

you want to update all levels regarding the autodownload-function?

whoa.

or only a list of em? if only a list: do you already have such a list?

I am willing to do my best to support this, because i had the same idea and already updated a few levels (like Ascent).

I know how to do this mn3-updates AND I will do my very best to get all Euro-Server-Ops to update. I am coordinating the Descentforum.NET aka DF.NET Server Project and the most important German Servers belong to this. So this would / will be no problem...

really great to see you such active man.

I really like your continoued support of this community. Thank you for this!

Do Checker,

I plan on a total update but will start with the most frequently played levels. If you will email or post here the most popular levels or levels that all would like to see updated then I WILL do them first.

Maybe we can find a programming guru that can easily create a utility to do this feature AUTOMATICALLY!

Well since I posted this KoolBear.com is back online and here's the updated list I will be adding/correcting the levels with.

The first two are that way because they are the oldest sites Image Pooterman number 1 because I remember downloading the first 15 or so Descentlevels from his site to start KoolBear' Descent with.

ftp://ftp.pooterman.com/descent3/levels/
http://www.koolbear.com/Descent/levels/d3/
http://www.dfiles.de/download/d3/missions/

I will take opinions on the other two since Do Checker has shown interest

http://www.levels4you.com/d3levels/
http://www.descent3fischlein.de/levels/
http://www.planetdescent.com/site/files/d3/

On another note, it looks like the Kool Mission Grabber just might be back, hopefully skinable and customizable!

Hi Sarge, it sure is good to see you and your servers still online and supporting this great community! Thanks for keeping the dream alive!

Damn i am a slow bastid eh? Sorry! Fischlein is a buddie of mine. He told me that you emailed him but he didn't understand. His english sucks (his own words). But he told me that we should feel free to add the Descent3Fischlein thingy into the Auto-Downloads, too!

okay here i listed the levels that seem to be the most important:

http://www.Descentforum.DE/missions/list_prio1.txt

if you think i missed a few please list them right here and I will add all to this list, okay?

I will have a look if we can find a few more helpers and then we should add the names of the dude who should chance the levels after the mission name, okay?

oh and: if you find URLS of www.Do-Clan.DE or www.Descentforum.DE/missions - these URLS are correct too.

If we needed some more download areas for a FEW levels we can use the descentforum.de/missions for the future, too (only if necessary).

this is a queation to all ServerOps:

Would you update your Levels when we are ready with updating the Auto-Download-URLs?

I would serve them in a list of zips via FTP and HTTP when finished (only the edited ones).

This project again can only make sense if you ServerOps update so before i start this work (i have 2 helpers for the editing so far we are 4 people all over) i have to know...

I try to put a server up whenever my family's connection isn't being used, and I would be more than happy to update my levels.

This whole thing sounds great!  My thanks for your efforts, guys.

<font color="#00FF00">edit:</font> Checkor, you mentioned "a list of zips".  If I might make a suggestion: I believe it would greatly simplify matters for server ops if you were to have one large zip file, containing all of the levels, available for download.  Perhaps you could also have the option to download them in 4 seperate zip files.

@ Thorne: yes i could make that easily. with ftp it be no matter what you take, but yea - if you like it that way i will put up one single mega-file TOO. NP.

"Munk" just finished a Unix-Script but i have no Unix-System running here. It should be used in the missions-root:

________________________________________________________________

#!/bin/bash

for i in $( ls *.mn3 ); do
echo -n "Processing $i :"
cat "$i" | grep --text -i 'URL' | awk -F " " '{print $2}' > "$i.url"
count=$(wget --spider -nv -i "$i.url" 2>&1| grep -i '200 OK' -c)
if [ $count -gt "0" ]; then
echo "OK"
else
echo "FAILED"
fi
rm "$i.url"
done
________________________________________________________________

This one sould find levels with NO Autodownload-URL . It will make a list with OK or FAILED.

I will find somebody to use it and then come back to here.

TY dude! Image

Munk and me copied 573 missions to the VEX-Server were at the moment he check-process is running.

After that we will get lists with
a ) no possible d/l
b ) 1 possible d/l
and so on. Then I will re-sort what files are really intersting to be changed. and THEN the work of updating can begin.

Nice work Do-Checker and all, so where do we stand? I lost my DSL due to a phone company mess up and still have a few days to go, plus I have a few other sites I am working on.

KoolBear.com is one of those Image

I think we only have 5 slots for download links, maybe that can be increased easily.

Matter of fact my son visits his mother this weekend, looks like I'll have a few hours to spare.

for info to all who like to know what is happing now:

All Fellows got a (huge) mail with all details that now should be interesting.

So far 127 missions will be updated. After ALL missions got uploaded to the servers of Descentforum.NET I will serve everything to the Hosters and ServerOps.

Great, I would still like to update as many levels as possible, hopefully 5 years from now 1 of those urls will still work

One question:
would this 'updating urls' thing mean
that the autoleveldownload would state an incompatible level?
Or is this 'url-thing' not part of that check?

Posted: Sat Feb 21, 2004 6:39 am
by Do_Checkor
Hi Atan!

The Level will still be compatible to the old ones on the computers of the clients.

We tested this several times in different directions (linux and MAC aswell). There is no problem with it at all. Only the D3L in the MN3 may NOT be changed (we really don't need to do).

regards.

Thats good, but I think It would be a good idea to wait for the 1.5 Patch since it looks like we will get it within the next 4-5 months or so.

But okay: If we have done with THIS list we maybe continue because of the great fun with it Image (j/k)

It's not hard to fix a level. Realistically there aren't many levels hosted on PXO anyway, so why don't we make sure that the levels that are active all have current links?

Posted: Sat Feb 21, 2004 10:03 pm
by DCrazy
Kevin Bentley is investigating a way of taking care of this on the PXO server. When a client attempts to join a PXO game for which he doesn't have the required mn3, PXO currently sends the client the list of download locations provided in the MN3 file. This can be changed to a server-side solution, where people "register" their download locations with a string like "h<heh />ttp://www<heh />.my-d3-levels.com/autodownload.php?file=%s", and PXO will fill in the %s with the name of the .mn3. It's up to the content providers to make sure the links they provide work.

Should you need another server, I'd be willing to help store some levels on either Sectorgame or Sectorfiles.com (Both are UK based)

Just as a side note:

Suncho mentioned dfiles.de and PlanetDescent, not dfiles.de and Fischlein. As far as I know, the file archive of dfiles.de is the same thing as the 'PD file archive'. I don't know if a direct download from PD would even work, I haven't tested.

Just so that you guys don't get wrong or duplicate download locations.

Yes, the PD file archive is located on dfiles.de. There are no direct download links to PD.

I updated 120 mission on my own and I am now waiting that the hosters download the mission-packs from my server.

After that all the ServerOps can download the updated ones...

i am sorry to say that no hoster send me a email back right now. seems that pooterman and KB are sleeping or summin :)

The guys on PD did'n reply on my request on some changes too. Even if the DFiles.DE Hoster Skorpion (who is a friend of mine) came back with a confirmation. We are jzst waiting for the "okay" by the PD staff.

oh and: yea - somehow it didn't read correct when i corrected you Sunch - sorry 4 that...

Uploaded, thanks Do Checker!

The 120 mission pack is uploaded at KoolBear.com and as time permits I will continue to update all d3 levels in my archive with the ;atest and greatest of the download urls.

What about Pooterman?
I am sorry that I wasn't be able to update DFiles.de yet. I wanted to get the permissions by Blueflames first but if he won't come back the next days...
Hmm...

I am sure Todd "Pooterman" has the same problems as I do, that is SPAM EMAILS.

It's a considerable effort to go thru literally thousands of emails. One of the downsides to operating serveral domains.

Spam filters aren't perfect :P
