Custom bots... in D1?

Post by Sirius »

Hi

Just to save me the hassle of finding out later, does anyone know whether, and if so (roughly) how, it is possible to get custom polymodels/bots in Descent 1 using nothing later than D1x ~1.40?

Just had a few ideas that I'm not totally sure are possible ... but it would be neat if there were some roundabout way of doing it. Preferably without altering the base game data files (although if it came to that I'd still think about it).

It's a stretch - for some reason I want to say 1.43 introduced the D1 equivalent of HXM support. All I remember of this was Garry showing me a briefing screen with the Mandrill boss in it. :)

Yeah, I was thinking I heard about something similar to that. It didn't seem to be documented anywhere I could find easily, though.

I heard about D1 having the ability to utilize new robots before, but documentation and implementation last I checked were very scarce and very hard to pull off. Probably not worth the time.

Never tried this myself, but I think you can make a HXM with
modifications to D1 robots. Put it in your missions dir with the
same name as the level (or HOG, or MSN, not sure; just try).

I have confirmed that this works with DTX patch files in D1x-rebirth.
Just put them in the missions dir with the same name as the level (or...).
Maybe you could also put it in the HOG file.

Update: looks like the HOG and missions dir are scanned for:
  • levelname.pg1
  • levelname.dtx
  • levelname.hx1
  • levelname.rdl
  • levelname.end
  • levelname.txb
So, try making a HXM with modifications only to D1 robots,
changing the extension to HX1, and putting it in the missions dir.
