wtf was around in '91/'92?

1991:
Commander Keen (some episodes)
Duke Nukem
Lemmings
Final Fantasy IV (2 in the US)

1992:
Wolfenstein 3D
Ultima Underworld
Jill of the Jungle
Dune
Sim City
Final Fantasy V

As you see, significantly behind Descent; the only games that were even 3D were Wolf3D and especially UUW.

I'm 18 now...and I pretty much started playing Descent when the retail came out...

so...using my college math experience, I was probably 8 or 9 when I started playing D1 (while using the invincibility cheat....if there was one thing I was afraid of at such an early age....it was dying) :P

Ouch,

Started with D1 Demo, haven't played another game more once, well except for Forsaken it was fun for about a week.

I'm 44, my son used to sit behind the joystick while I was playing, today he's 7 and hooked. He loves to play and whenever he sees me chatting with people he always says hey I remember him in the game or I've never played him, Dad man he was good! Guess what dad today I played a girl ;) Dad! Ask them if they remember Wheeler!

All of you are the best and thanks for making Descent what it is! And for your contributions to his and my entertainment for what about 11-12 years!

:)

D1 Demo.
Don't even remember when/how I got it though. Then I searched for kali due to some chatter I heard about it. And that was it. I was hooked.
And then I bought a 3d Sidewinder ($60!!) and I was addicted.
Then set up a couple of LAN tournaments near Chicago.
D2 was ok, D3, I barely touched but looked real purty.

ps oh yah, im 35 now

This bear started playing D1 Levels of the World in 1996, after seeing D1 on a computer in late 1995. I have also played D2 in 1996 and D3 in 2000.

Umm, I had a copy that came with my first compy, Descent II : Destanation Quartzone (I think), anyways this wasn't the full verson, more like half. (It only went up to level 9) So, I was about five, and now I'm 15. But I do have D3, but the thing is, CD1 has a crack thats by the inner edge of the disk (Disc?). It is still readable (I can only install it on min option) But, I can't play it! My comp says: \"Invalid CD ROM!\". So, what do I do now?! :? Stupid compy! >_< :x

D1 demo.. first played it the week it came out back in november 94. i was 13 at the time. me and my local friends used to play modem to modem games.

hey, anybody remember the \"sound click\" bug? it happened whenever you were playing a modem-modem game on the original d1 demo, the sound would click like every 5 seconds... it was really annoying :)

anyway. been playing ever since. for whatever reason, i used to always play the game around christmas time, so now whenever winter comes around i get in the descent spirit agian, especially on xmas eve. something about the atmosphere of drinking eggnog and the xmas lights and stuff :)

25 years old this month. descent is definitely the best game ever made :)

Started Summer '96 w/D1 Demo on aunt's new computer... I could NEVER beat the boss robot! I was looking and looking and looking for a reactor, I could not find one, so I gave up on Level 7... little did I know that was the last level in the demo! Didn't discover this 'til I got the PSX version.

I have all descents... ALL OF THEM! D1 PC, D1 PSX, D1 MAC (for the music *choir ahhhh!*), D2, D2 vertigo, D3, D3MERC, annnd... any I may have missed.

Favorite was D1. I do not play anymore because I don't have time anymore, HOWEVER I live and breathe descent music! I also have TWO MP3-CDs of ALLLL descent music. One is all MIDIs, and the evolution of how the MIDIs sound on different computers over time, and one is all the other music from D1 PSX, D2 redbook, and D3/D3 Merc. I also made my own remixes of D1 music. The one I am most proud of is the remix of Ratzez. I'll post it sometime.

I turned 21 in Nov. '05, and been playing since I was 11.

Apparently it is to a 7-year-old. He probably has a very different perspective on the world from the rest of us...

d1 shareware version. Didn't really get into it at first but loved co-op play. I can remember spending a day tracking down a copy of d2 in early '99 so we could compleate that multiplayer.

OK, I'll bite... I've been holding off posting here, but seems I can't resist the pull of reminiscence... a sure sign of advancing age, I suspect.

I started playing December 14th, 1994- the day I finished grad school finals. Soon afterwards I found the PPG on IRC, started playing multi w/ IHHD and direct modem connections until KaliDOS came out, but my poor university had crappy dial-up and Kali didn't work w/ it until they upgraded the system about 6 months later. Played D2 and D3 about equal time, but never got as good in D3 as the other 2... probably b/c I was finishing a dissertation/having kids by then. While I played a lot on kali, I didn't hang in Kchat that much, mostly used IRC to set up games, since Kchat was a pretty primitive interface. I used to skip out of my research lab every Wednesday and play all afternoon on a home-built P-120 O/C to 133 Mhz with.... 24 MB of RAM!!!! woohooo! The funny thing is, that was a smokin' system back then :D
Oh, I'm 37 now.

I started playing when I was... hmm... 10ish. I'm 19 now. Me and a freind go the D1 demo randomly, and coudln't figure out what hte hellw e were supposed to do for about a week of gameplay. But it was cool. Then we found the control bindings menu and all was well:P. Bought the full version in a store, and loved it so much I ordered D2 from a school book+software catolouge:P. Lucky me... D2 is still one of my favourite games, if not the best.

I got D3 off Ebay last year - never liked it as much, but its stil a blast. Fun being able to play online.

D1 Demo with Kali DOS reg ID around the 1000 mark (Which I also used to play a lot of Warcraft and CnC). I'm 23 now. I was the youngest member of the \"South Florida Descent League\" LAN party group at about age 13/14 for about a year or two. We had LOADS of fun. I mean SO much fun to where I look back in my memory and think of those as some of the most fun times of my life. Now I'm 23, and looking for work as a Firefighter/Paramedic here in south FL. I've never stopped playing online games, and never will. If you remember me, drop me a word! :D

Wow... this thread's been around a while... and I'm just now realizing I never responded to it. For shame. Oh well... NECROPOST TIME! ;p

There was a stretch of time in the early 90's in which I was working retail at Cutlery World (play all day with knives, of course it was fun!) and wandered into Waldensoftware every day on my lunch breaks. I struck up quick friendships with the guys there. They had a PC set up on a table to demo games reguarly, and I would play whatever was new and cool that came in. Ironically, I was a heavy Amiga junkie back then and refused to take the plunge into owning a PC, yet I would avidly play (and usually beat) most of the PC games getting released on that demo PC. Games like Ultima Underworld, the first couple of X-Wing games, Mechwarrior, I enjoyed them all without actually owning a non-Amiga.

Then, one day, they got copies of the Descent 1 demo and loaded it up. Within a matter of weeks, I had built myself a PC for the sole purpose of playing Descent. When I found out about KaliDOS and the ability to play against others in Descent through that medium, I was quick to jump on that bandwagon and never slowed down.

In retrospect, it's interesting to note that I ended up working at, and eventually managing that same software store before moving away to a larger city for the sake of a better computer-related job market. These days, I work for a national ISP doing monitoring and support of enterprise class systems across various OS platforms and hardware... and I feel that, in a way, I owe it all to Descent.

I daresay that many of us, maybe even most of us, can say that Descent changed our lives. Now THAT's a game with impact.
