D2X-XL crashes when I try to configure keyboard or controls

I'm using D2X-XL 1.5.65 on Windows XP Home with XP2. I can start the program, I can even play the game, but if I try to configure keyboard, joystick, or mouse, the program terminates without error message. I've recreated this problem on two computers with two totally different configurations. Can anyone help me to overcome this problem? I'm so looking forward to a nostalgic return to the mines of PTMC. Thanks!
