Top 3 favorite CDs and songs

Post by Asrale »

Little poll here. Name your top 3 favorites for each, from your personal collection, and why! Image (if you want to)

#1 CD: "Lifeforms" by Future Sound of London
Mind-blowing when you're really listening!

#2 CD: "Wipeout XL" by various artists
Few know about this CD. Image Absolutely love it because it encapsulates the entire "electronica" genre and has some great releases from back when it was experimental ('95-'97).

#3 CD: "Mezzanine" by Massive Attack
Don't like vocals in general, but Mezzanine is an artsy classic for bringing together electronica and rock/jazz/funk/etc.

#1 song: "We Have Explosive" by Future Sound of London
Hard-driving electronica that doesn't use drums and still brings on the noise!

#2 song: "Halcyon + On + On" by Orbital
The emotional impact still gets me every time...

#3 song: "Vapor Trail" by The Crystal Method
TCM's best in hard bass and low-kicking drums with serious attitude!

Hmm.

#1 CD: "Descent 2"
Forever Awesome.

#2 CD: "Fury 3" by Kyle Richards
1995 MS game. Damned shame the rest of the worlds weren't included on it. I want Planet Tiamat's original ver. so bad it's not even funny.

#3 CD: "Zelda - Majora's Mask OST"
Good stuff.

Songs? They're all 1st place.

CD 1: Metallica - Master of Puppets. - Welcome Home "Sanitarium" sounded like a soundtrack to my childhood.

CD 2: NightWish - Wishmaster. - Newer discovery and absolutely rocks. Trying to get more of their material. "Thx Scorch Image"

CD 3: Iced Earth - Something Wicked This Way Comes. - Still special to me since this was the first CD of theirs I got. I now have all of them.

Song 1: Welcome Home "Sanitarium" - Metallica. (See Above)

Hard for me to pick favorite songs because I like so many. So this is about it for me.

Currently:

"Life is Killing Me" by Type-O Negative
It's Goth-ish, not for everyone, but I think it's great. A band I seemed to overlook somehow and recently discovered. It's sorta dark and melodic, without the awful cookie monster vocals that metal seems to embrace these days.

"Take Them On, On Your Own" by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Had low expectations and ended up liking it. Nothing fancy, just a good straight ahead rock album. The vocals seem Beatle-esque to me.

"Vapor Transmission" by Orgy
Never listened to them before, bought the cd and think it's pretty good. Melodic rock/electronic stuff.

Songs from ^

1) The Dream is Dead, Nettie, I don't wanna be me, Anesthesia, or Electrocute ... can't pick.

2) Stop

3) Opticon

NightWish - Wishmaster with Fear Factory - Demanufacture.

I forgot how much of a kick ass CD that was. Friggin awesome Image

Then add for favorite songs...

Song 2: Body Hammer - Fear Factory.

3 cd's and 3 songs? that's impossible unless you want to close your mind to thousands of artists, styles, and songs... so here goes. ;p

CDs:
1) The Beatles - Abbey Road
2) Prince - Sign of the Times
3) Stevie Wonder - Songs in the key of Life

Songs:
1) Prince - old friends for sale (the real version)
2) Bob Dylan - Desolation Row (live in 1966)
3) The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter

ya, that is a limited list... thank the higher power you don't have to choose. you can like it all.

I don't care about nostalgia value, Scorch; how could you possibly rate Metallica higher than DT? Image

I would have mentioned it too but I don't own any full DT albums, I just leech off my friend's. Image But I do have tickets to the April 3rd show "An Evening with Dream Theater" at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden... should be a blast. Image

I don't think anybody's into the DnB scene here, so it's pointless for me to list off albums and titles, especially since some of them are from local DJs.

Changes all the time, but if i was pushed.

Albums.

1. Diamond Dogs- David Bowie. It was toss up between Dogs and Ziggy. The guy is a god in the music world, Mr innovator. From his first to his last albums he is always breaking the mould. The problem with Bowie's music is that it has to wait for the rest of the human race to catch up and understand it before he can move on.

2. Revolver- Beatles. "The coming of age album" A great pop baand that wrote melody instead of the crappy versechoraskeychangechoras crap that is listened to today.

3. Van Morrison-Astral Weeks. It's classic, irish and poetic. It's Van the Man.

Songs

Telling You I'm Not Going- Jennifer Holliday...big band song from "dreamgirls" i defy anyone not to be moved by the voice.

Velvet underground- Sweet Jane. Clever and moody song

Bowie- Sweet Thing/candidate. An anthem.

Hmm... let's see...

1. Incubus - Make Yourself
2. 808 State - Gorgeous
3. Vertical Horizon - Go

Songs:
1. Nickelback - Someday, especially after seeing the music video
2. Rufus Wainwright - Hallelujah
3. Brown Derbies - Romeo and Juliet

These change constantly. Happens when your tastes are so freaking varied.

nope, but I do own Ultimate Manilow. Image

Dcrazy: The members of DT may be better musicians than Metallica (hands down, not even a contest), but Metallica's music just connects with me more. Sure, JP can spew out a Phrygian shred in 7/8 time over a Songo bassline in 5/6 time, while MP plays blast beats with his pinky, but the guys from Metallica can really create riffs and sounds that just reach me... They might not be as technical, but they are at least as artistic. I mean, just listen to Orion. That songs tells a story, and it doesn't even have any lyrics! They convey emotions and vibes very well through their music, and that's a gift even the most talented guitarist may not have.
Plus, Hetfield has a much better voice than Labrie (although labrie has better range)

I sort of have 3 standard favorite cds and then 3 current favorites.. this is a mix of the two I guess

CD #1: Aphex Twin - I Care Because You Do
(an all time favorite)

CD #2: Vladislav Delay - Multila
(a recent favorite.. been playing this one a lot)

CD #3: Autechre - Tri Repetae
(an all time favorite)

Song #1: Aphex Twin - Alberto Basalm

Song #2: Vladislav Delay - Pietola

Song #3: Autechre - Leterel.. or Autechre - Stud

Asrale: That Wipeout XL cd is pretty good.. I personally like the version of "we have explosive" off that cd more than the original track.

Pandora: Nice taste! My favorite off of Draft 7.30 is Surripere

Itâ??s very hard for me to pick just one or even three CDs, Groups, or Artists. There is so much cross over.

Artists:
Sting
Gloria Estefan
Stevie Nicks

Groups:
Yello
Eagles
Fleetwood Mac

CDs:
The Final Cut â?? Pink Floyd
Welcome to The Pleasure Dome â?? Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Speaking In Tongues â?? Talking Heads

Songs:
Self Control â?? Laura Branigan
Politics of Dancing â?? Re-flex
Come on Eileen â?? Dexyâ??s Midnight Runners (or Save Ferris both are good)

I have so many to choose from. I tried to select something for each area with out any cross over.

Hey Phantasmagirl, yeah the WoXL CD is good stuff. It's what turned me on to certain artists (Fluke, Photek, Source Direct) and off to others (Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers). Haven't gotten a Chem Bros CD since '97. Image I prefer Fluke's remixed "Atom Bomb" too...

Physical Graffitti - Led Zeppelin

Blackout - The Scorpions

Van Halen 2 - Van Halen

Songs?

Kashmir - Led Zeppelin

Get Off My Cloud - Rolling Stones

Dogs - Pink Floyd
