Alright, everybody share one (or more) tips that you've learned to help you live your life better. For example, how to avoid getting points on your license from the speeding ticket!
Anyway, here's something I learned back in the days of the Boy Scouts:

Avoiding Traffic Points: When stopped, say nothing incriminating and don't be a smartass or show attitude. Stay in car, roll down window, gather license and registration, hold these while having your hands at the top of the wheel so the cop can see you are no threat.
From the moment you are stopped, plan how you're going to fight it in court. With this mindset you are less likely to say/do something that's going to sink your ability to beat the ticket. Lacking an admission of guilt, it's frequently your word against the cop's and (in theory) that's not enough to convict. Also, don't telegraph to the cop that you intend to fight it because then he/she will be much less sloppy. You want to be very forgettable to the cop while at the same time gathering all the details you can about what the cop was driving, car number, type of weather, traffic and road conditions, and anything else that will make you appear more *aware* than the cop in court.
The cop is trained to get you to admit guilt immediately with something like *Did you know you were going 70 in a 45 area?* or *What's the hurry?* You have the right to remain silent or change the subject. Talk about the weather if he cliffhangs you but don't admit to anything and don't argue. Cops don't decide your guilt but they do write down everything you say and do on the back of the ticket, which is often the only thing the DA/Judge will read. It's a fallacy that if you have a reasonably good excuse for breaking the law you might get off with a warning. Pfft, I don't think I've ever gotten a warning. You are a quota, a fish on the line, and cops rarely practice catch-and-release anymore.
Accept the ticket but ALWAYS fight it. The worse that can happen is a slight court fee being added on to what you would have paid anyway. The probable scenario is the DA will plea bargain you a better offer to avoid wasting the court's time, such as Obstructed View or some such lame infraction. The point is you will likely face NO POINTS, a lesser fine and it will clear off your record alot sooner simply because you stood up for yourself. In the end, that's all most municipalities really want; a guilty plea so they can get some cash-money. They're not particularly interested in giving you points or community service 'cause those things don't buy shiney new police cars or cushy office furniture.
If you're going down, go out fighting. And string it out as long as possible with charts, diagrams, satellite photos, radar gun analysis sheets, character witnesses, blah. At least you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you've cost the government a helluva lot more to find you guilty than the fine you will end up paying. They may threaten you with jailtime if you lose to scare you off from fighting it but that's mostly bluff, imo, because really, again, all they want is your money. Traffic court can be handled by any reasonably intelligent person without costly legal representation. You only expend some time and effort but judges, DAs, cops, stenographers, bailiffs, clerks, etc., don't come cheap and they don't want to waste that value on you and your little speeding ticket. The odds are in your favor that the court will play nice PRIOR to facing a judge.
This is from someone who has been driving for 30 years (often quite spiritedly), has been ticketed many times and yet has retained a spotless driving record.

To expand on B's post-Don't ever, ever consent to search. The police are also trained in getting you to consent with you realizing it.
Things like:
You're standing outside the car-
"would you open your door, please?"
"would you mind unlocking your car?"
Also, don't ever fall for the line "That's fine, we'll call in the drug sniffing dog"
If you don't know your rights, you don't have any.

Ignore pain.
It's easier than you think, and people tend to think more of you if you don't yelp at every little thing that hurts. The really big stuff you're gonna feel, whether you like it or not, but after a while you simply get to ignore minor pains. Most minor pains aren't really telling you anything important anyway; I.E. banging your hand against the wall by accident as you turn a corner will hurt for a while, but you know you did something to it, so there's really no reason for the brain to process the "pain" signals and go through all the motions of yelping etc. It's amazing how many people yelp and complain about "breaking a nail". Which brings up another good point.
Don't break your nails. Peel them with your other nails. No more ingrown nail problems.

Allow me to offer an amendment to your tip. I once spent the night on a sidewalk while waiting in line for Wimbledon tickets. It was the last week of June and I almost froze to death. Don't take up analogue electronics.

My advice: live another 20 years - and you'll be right there! 
1) wear sunscreen on your face
2) become more accepting
3) In your personal relationships - let your partner do whatever the hell they want. Then decide if you still want to be with them. Never try to prevent them doing anything - unless they're trying to walk out in front of a moving bus.
4) Set aside more time with your parents - they'll be gone soon.
5) Set aside more time with your kids.
6) Time is the most valuable thing you have, share it with the people you love.
7) Don't ever think money will buy you happiness - it won't. But what it does buy is a very comfortable environment in which to be less-than-happy.
Don't swear in front of women, or clergy.
9) Give your mother some flowers occasionally, and watch her beaming smile.

When she asks you to stop leaving the seat up, then promptly pee all over the seat while it is down and leave it that way.
If I'am courteous enough to raise the seat to take a leak, she can at least have that much to put it back down.

Agree to never lie to each other no matter what and a new world will open for your relationship. Nosfertau, eminent domain has absolutely nothing to do with car searches. 
Rather, by virtue of using state-owned roads, states believe that they have the authority to search your car to make sure you are operating it within their regulations -- which also happen to be state law. It's called Implied Consent, and by driving in a state you tacitly agree to its Implied Consent law.
