\"I spoke recently with an old friend who is a ....\"

Geez, this is how they ALL start off.

Discuss.
I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up on disk somewhere.

cringley is quite cringe worthy.

Seriously, when was the last time you recall when google was muderously slow?

All that fibre and data centres, all over the places, is just to keep google running; services like gmail, video, youtube, and google maps are either bandwidth or storage hungry or both, so Cringley manages to miss the obivious for the sake of sounding like a spooky prophet.

Owning the internet means providing support and upkeep for it and nearly 1.5 billion customers, and google, if anything, isn't sucidal.

i found this part interesting:

By buying out all the remaining building sites in an industrial park owned by an electric utility, Google guarantees itself a vast and uninterruptible supply of power, much as it has done in Oregon by building a data center next to a hydroelectric dam or back here again in Columbia by building near a nuclear power station.

building next to a nuke plant? thats definitely uninterruptible service

Google is also working with the bulk of companies that manufacture PC power supplies in order to improve the efficiency of PC power supplies in general. Google can probably save millions by getting PSUs from the 70-80% efficient range up to 90-95%. Reliable and cheap power is a major issue for Google, and they will also go to great lengths to lower their electric bill.

Nothing dangerous about being next to a nuclear power facility, probably less safe next to a water treatment facility.

Google is building a site about 30 miles from where I live:

They got a heck of a break on taxes.
