A short article about how epic and MS managed to give PC players of Gears or War(1)PC the shaft. In short, for legit players, their game (as in all copies) quit working Jan 28th 09.
You will need a No-CD crack to continue playing or wait until a patch comes out. ... or rather \"if\".
It's a great time to be a gamer.
All sarcasm and disdain aside, I find this a bit perplexing. It's hard for me to believe that it was done intentionally and/or that this would have been missing in development. .. dunno..
Yes, nowadays, I've missed out on a few good gaming experiences because I looked on the back of the box and read, \"Due to some copy protection software, you can only install the game a limited amount of times, requires internet to unlock game, and will install some extra additional protection software without your consent.\"
I think its all so stupid. I've passed on so many games because of this bull★■◆●.
Killed... as in dropped support? or They aren't planning to make another one?
What I'm talking about is that you are LOCKED out from PLAYING the game you have in your computer....legitimately! Like it Expired. You actually bought a $50 dollar demo! o_0
Microsoft also killed FASA, the once successful house that made Mechwarrior games, as well as any other development shop and license that at one point in time was very successful but due to Microsoft's greed no longer exist.
Here's a Living Legends article that's rather intereting. Nothing particularly NEW, but there is plenty of info about it's development along with their dealings with MS.
It's 4 pages long and easy to read.
The Descent community isn't a good yardstick, given that it was smaller to begin with, the last release is older, and there are zero competitive leagues left compared to Mechwarrior's (barely) two.
I'm not even sure you're talking about Mechwarrior 4, since neither TKing nor XP were significant problems at all in my experience. The big exodus of players happened in around 04-05 because the game was old and dated.
The reason why that series is dead is a combination of poor business decisions on both MS and FASA's part. MS doesn't see any profit in further versions of Mechwarrior, or at best they're waiting to see how MWLL does. FASA was simply in a bad place as no-one is buying Battletech board games anymore. Wizkids tried to resurrect the franchise, but tabletop has a cult audience these days and they were pitching at the kinds of people who'd rather be playing video games. Last year they went under as well.
Must not have been any policing at all, and furthermore the other players must have sucked. TKing loses its novelty when you're getting gangraped by your team for being a douchebag.
