Post by Duper »

To get an idea of how BIG this star really is, read Here

I dont get it either, both links seemed normal to me

Give them all to God and surrender to His greatness. I ask you to accept His generosity, compassion and His LOVE. His love is bigger then anything we can ever imagine!
Seems the second link is from a religious group.

Hmf. It would seem so. I linked it for the pictures, I hadn't read the blog part.

Doesn't even mention Jesus in the text. It Seems to be Jewish judging from the quote at the top.

geez Hostile Relax. On the other hand, now you know how I feel whenever I visit .com. ... which i do very infrequently.

See, it's ok, even Ferno says "god". ;)

all that aside, it just blows my mind how big that star .. or any of them for that matter, are.

Both links are about stars - the second link discusses the relative size of the stars in a religous context whereas the first does not. The size of the stars is awe inspiring. The borderline zelacious overtones of the second article do subtract from the impact for me though - and I'm a believer.

Meh. To each their own I guess.

well, actually, I made a mistake. When I posted the second link, I was thinking the last image was our Sun compared to Betelgeuse, when in fact it is VY Canis Majoris.

wow!
We were discussing this at work and we all pretty much agreed that it's not quite possible to getour heads around something that big (if you'll pardon the pun).

As for the religious content. I wasn't aware of it at first as I didn't READ the page. Judging from some of the content on the blog, I'm venturing a guess the guy is Jewish but I can't comfirm that. And I'm Christian, not orthidox Jew. There was no intention to \"deceive\" anyone here. Been through that before.

More info on Canis Majoris on wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VY_Canis_Majoris

And Wiki on Betelgeuse: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betelgeuse

Thanks for the clarification Duper - and yes, the sizes of these things are beyond comprehension! :o

Watch this video called the Powers of 10. It might help you look at things on a different scale.

I remember seeing Powers of Ten at Discovery World Museum in Milwaukee as a kid; quite the wonder indeed. I wouldn't mind seeing the visuals redone with modern CGI.
