edit lock out

Post by Isaac »

I don't mind doing the php/ajax research needed.

Idea:
“Lock edit” button allows a user to keep another (non staff) user from editing their post. Once lock edit is elected for a post, the owner will either loose his/her edit button or will return a message \"you have been locked out by user(s) = x,y,z. You can not edit until locks are released.\"

that's a mod privilege. Please don't \"hack\" the board.

are you suggesting that you'll create something that will lock the original poster out of their own post?

or are you proposing a modification that will prevent another user from editing an author's post?

the former will be a ticket to a permaban, the other isn't an issue because no user should have another user's credentials.

Oh no. I think I got off on the wrong foot here.

First of all I don't think a hack like this would be possible. It might be, but I wouldn't be capable of it.

It would be a mod. I would try it on a test bb site of the same version and once ready link the source code to this thread.

This board already keeps people from editing their own posts.

Sadly

This is true. I guess there is no need for this mod...
Consider my proposal retracted.

Sadly
You can edit your own posts and even delete them (a fairly new feature). You just can't delete your own THREAD once someone else has posted in it.

You can edit and delete by using these options:

Ok, it looks like the E&C Forum is the only one with a Delete option.

Issac, I said "hack" in quote to denote figurative speech. The real question is why do we need a mod like this? There are already functions at the Mods disposal to do what you're suggesting. A non-staff member shouldn't have what would be considered "permissions powers". The potential for abuse makes it a risk.

Make a large enuf post someday, and you just might find out…

(The board is failing to edit the larger posts)

Ask Goob, if you don’t believe me, or just read some of the posts in this thread…

viewtopic.php?t=15897

Unless you make & edit large posts, you would never notice anything.

Yes, editing large posts seems to exceed the timeout limit for the edit process.

My guess is that it's a Db issue. The DBB has periodically needed some Db cleanup. I think Koolbear is the one who has done that in the past. Perhaps someone can contact him?

---------

Isaac, why build a feature to let UserX prevent UserY from editing their own posts? Is it so UserX can prevent UserY from claiming \"I never said that\"?

In that case, a much better solution would just be for the DBB to turn on edit indicators (\"Thread edited on _____\").

These are still present if you use one of the other themes (such as BBTech), the edited indicators are only missing from the main theme.

I have no “This Post was edited on…” or anything like it, and I’m using the Green theme.

timeouts and the edits being disabled are two very different things.

Fine, if you're going to post something vague that looks like a lack of information, then get all pissy about it, i won't bother trying to help.

Spidey, cookies don't make a difference. The \"edited on...\" only shows up if you edit your post after someone has already replied to it. If it is the last post in the thread than you can edit it as many times as you like and that feature won't show up.

Of course since editing a post in a thread after there are other replies to it is pretty much impossible at the moment because the database server times out it doesn't really matter right now. I would have done it with my post just up there, but after 15 attempts and nothing but nice empty white pages I give up. :P

Krom…Does this function work in the Green theme? Because I’m not seeing it.

Duper…sorry, my post was vague.

People were seeing the timeout problems, and I just figured they would know that’s what I meant.

I don't know since I've never looked, my guess is it doesn't though since that theme was based off the main theme.
