UT@2K4 FPS

Post by woodchip »

Anyone know how to test the speed of UT2K4? In the old UT the was a command for fps to be displayed on screen while playing. I don't see this feature in the newer version.

in the console, or just press "TAB"
type "stat FPS"

same as in UT2k3

And if you really want to scare yourself, do "stat all" ;)

By the way, use "stat none" to turn off stat tracking.

Use the tilde key (~) to bring up the console to enter these commands. There are a lot of neat little console commands you can issue to the Unreal Engine.

A Google search for Unreal console commands will also give you a complete list.

I dunno, but it may be time for a new vid card. so find waldo and tell me why only 35 fps avg.:

MSI KT4V mobo
512 meg of PC 3300 ram
AMD 2500 Barton
ATI 9700 pro 128 meg cache

Setting in UT2k4:
Detail high
Sound 3d hardware (TB SC sound card, drivers current)
1024 x 768

ATI settings:
Monitor 75 hz
4x anti a.
32 bit color
8x anis.

I know that I can reduce the values of any of these settings, but I like the detail. Maybe the question should be not "why 35 fps" but rather can this system do any better at the above settings?

i dunno man.

i have a p4 3.0
1024MB
ati 9800 pro

and i can run it up at 1600x1600
w/ 4x AA and 4x AF and still manage above 60 fps..

keep in mind a lot of people forget to uncheck "56k" in ther network settings in UT2k3/4. this prevents you from going any higher then 30 fps in a multiplayer game. make sure anything higher then "DSL" is checked and it should be fine.

Network settings are at cable/adsl so I don't think this is the problem. Punk you have a faster cpu and twice the ram so that could be a big plus. Also the 9800 has what?...twice the cache of the 9700?

Not enough RAM - you have.

Too much Antialiasing for 1024 mode - you have.

I'm not sure how much AA sucks down the framerate, but for an uberfastpaced game like UT2k4 its really not necessary imo. I dont have any AA or anis and it runs smooth and looks awesome (awesome enough for me, that is. if you need AA on in this game you have much better eyes than me ;))

I run UT2k4 on my fairly old computer and get suprisingly good results.

My system
P4 1.7ghz / 768 MB PC-800 RDRAM
GeForce FX 5900 / SB Audigy 2

Game/Graphics Settings:
Majority of detail set on "LOW"
1280 x 1024
4 x Aniso 4 x AA

Frames rarely drop below 40, usually average 60 or so. And it actually looks damn nice too. They did a great job with making this game graphically scalable.

The reason I run the Aniso and AA is that I know my processor is starving my graphics card, and I don't want it feeling lonely. The average frames only go up a couple fps with these set 'off'

Suggestion: Try not using hardware sound. I have my sound set in Safe mode, it made a difference in my framerates.

Did that patch hurt you guys at all?
I am reading that it did alot of damage to many people, including myself.
I'm not installing back on my system until they get a patch to fix the patch.

Make sure nothing is running in the background either. I don't know the settings on your mb, but you can oc that 2500+ quite a bit with just a copper heatsink and fan (stock 1.83, mine is 2.12, with only very slight increase in core voltage) More ram probably wouldn't hurt either, ram is cheap, I'd get another 512

768 megs of RAM is a good amount to have, especially if you love the sheer texture detail this game offers. 512 is basically a minimum for an enjoyable experience, and if you're playing with any less...go shoot yourself. And watch your body fly, stop in midair for a moment, and fly and stop some more before finally hitting the ground.

Woodchip, you'd probably do well to experiment with your FSAA and aniso settings some. Maxing them out is not a good thing to do, they eat memory bandwidth like crazy in a game like UT2K4.
