Old ammo question

Post by Tunnelcat »

Is old ammo safe to store, or even keep around? I've got a partial box of some really old Remington 12 gauge pheasant load shotgun ammo. It's probably at least 30 years old, if not older, but it's been kept relatively dry and cool, the case is plastic and the brass is still somewhat shiny. It came with my dad's old 1951 Browning A5 shotgun. I doubt it's good for bird hunting, so should I dispose of it properly, and if I do, where?

...colored fumes escaping from the container upon opening...
Yeah I'd say that's a pretty bad sign for most chemicals.

Rent a double barrel shot gun and kill some terrorist clay pigeons.

Could try the HHW collection or the PD.

If they are old paper shells, you should probably not shoot them if they look the least bit buldged (not that they would chamber anyway)

Thanks guys. I don't want to take them apart to burn the gunpowder, so I might just call up either my garbage company's hazardous waste center, or the PD. The casing's are plastic and there are no fumes, stains or anything like that. But because I estimate that the shells are at least 30 years old, I'd just like to dispose of them properly. I definitely wouldn't want to shoot the things with an iffy storage past and cause damage to the gun.
