Started the mod on the case for the Dually

Post by STRESSTEST »

Well, I figured I'd do something fun for this dually box you all know about by now.

Some of you may have seen my racks here at home, if not here's a pic of the 4 servers:

So anyway, the rack will hold another 2 chassis and I managed to score 2 more last night. They are being shipped, but they are the same. So I decided to get started using some of the parts from the existing units.

Let me set this up for you. I want to water-cool the XEON’s and I happen to have a busted up koolance PC601 hulk compliments of Gonzo and UPS. They severely Fed his case up when I sent it to him and after a lengthy insurance claim, thy paid off. Bob got a new case and I kept the bashed up case. The actual cooling components in this thing are all intact though. So today I stripped the beast and tossed the scrap metal in the trash.

Here's what is done so far :P

In a nut shell:

1) Removed the red block 3 digit LED and replaced with a blue unit ensuring it stood above the board to meet the LEDs in near proximity height-wise
2) Removed the green and amber LEDs and replaced with Blue and white respectively.
3) Shortened the LED standoffs
4) Cut the ★■◆● out of the bezel and mounted the control unit.
5) Removed 3 components from the front of the board and replaced them on the back of the board due to height restrictions during the mounting of the board to the bezel. X1, C11 and C12

The chassis were 80 ea. shipped.
All the Koolance stuff was free since it was a insurance claim
I went to Fry's last weekend and scored a pair of 60 gig Maxtor retail DHs for 44.95 out the door ea.

So..

Dual Xeon’s 119.00
Asus PC-DL 188.00
1 Gig 2x512 OCZ EL Platinum 3200 150.00
SGI Case 80.00
Fortron 550watt EPS 95.49
Koolance stuff Free
Maxtor 60 gig 48.68
Spare video card nothing
Rails for chassis to mount to rack 35.00

Total 716.17

pretty good for a box that promises at least 5.6Ghz
