Right... so your definition of a good game is one that takes over a month just to get used to how to play?
Don't worry Goober, the men in white coats are coming to take you away now...
games arn't fun unless they are a proper challenge.
it took me ages to get good at psygnosis lander - but now who's cool eh? EH? the answer is me

it would probably be the smartest thing to incorporate different levels of control assistance. these can be managend by the server and thus define what's a newbie game and what's pro. those who want the pro mode but still want to join newbie games just up the difficulty level. not that THIS would be cheating, because it would be just harder for yourself ;)
it's like trainee, semi pro and pro in racing games.

but hey, are we already talking about what will be in D4? i remember multiple earlier discussions :P

I think we should compile all previous threads\\ideas into a package and send it to Interplay, titled \"Ideas For D4, and Things That You Screwed Up On In D3\"

Thats why it is so important, that if and when another Descent-like game is made, that a SOLID single player experience is made with a good storyline to make the player want to figure out whats up next. I enjoyed D2 when I first played Descent because I loved the level design and the non-cartoonish atmosphere. I didnt just fight, I was exploring. The diversity of the words was neat too. That's whats going to be needed to make Descent sell, by being clever about keeping the player glued to the monitor. That is easier said that done unfortunately.

Ideas for Descent 4

Let us begin:
Blu-Ray 50GB Disc
DX11 (Windows 7 required)
Recommended Quad Core CPU (Up to 128 Thread Support)
Recommended Enthusiast GPU (SLI for HD, Quad SLI for XHD, 8-way SLI for playable XHD)
X-Fi Utilization
PhysX/GPU Physics
1920p movies
Customizable ships (6 that can be customized including Aggressor Prime which is basically a Tank on Steroids.)
Nukes (I know, could be bad idea, but look at Crysis)
Limited to in-ship, although allow graphics to depict characters inside ships
Single Player Plot: Alien Virus Creators Invade Earth
Make Crysis 2 look bad
While Halo 3 introduced the \"Entertainment Event of the Year,\" advertise D4 as \"Entertainment Event of the Decade\"
Launch 2009 and advertise like crazy
MP goes up to 32 players per team, 4 teams per map
$50

... and keep a big part of people out of question, who can't or don't want to buy a $2000+ system. keep out that war crap (don't copy other games ideas), a mega kills a ship just as good with a single hit. limiting possibilities limits amount of potential newbies (=buyers) and frustrates modders. don't expect such a tight schedule, it makes things worse than just 4 patches within one year.

add OpenGL, OpenAL, Linux and Mac to OS requirements (cross platform is easily done if properly prepared (for descent, heh)). don't bind it to the newest windows (see above). customizable ingame chat (server address).

Uh, look in the Descent 4 archives. That is where I got this name. Before I was Black Pyro 3.

Why do people here have an odd tendancy to, when they accidentally double post, then go and edit the other posts to say something useless but not delete them outright?

Anyway, I guess we could allow Vista and DX10, but with a sacrifice of a lot of features. :(

Actually, that did happen. Remember "Engage Online"? It was a modification of the D1 code that was playable through their website. Obviously you had to create an account, but it worked pretty good. You had a choice of three ships. The Tigg, Pyro, and Aggressor Prime. The neat thing was that the two new ships couldn't pick up certain powerups, and came pre-loaded with certain weapons. Matter of fact, there was a link to it on the old Interplay D1/D2 forum.

Its an unintentional glitch in the code that was left in, due to alot of non-mods finding it useful.

BACK ON TOPIC!!!!

Wasn't SOME progress made on Descent 4 before the project was cancelled? If so, that's slightly less development time to worry about.

Again, correct me if I'm wrong.

Just as an FYI, Engage Games was where I first met Capm in early 1996 and he had just started Midnight Squadron. Engage Games was fun and had some other games besides Descent (I seem to remember a paintball game among others) but as soon as it went to a per minute rate after the long beta everyone left. I am sure a monthly sub would have worked better as it would not have taken long to rack up an enormous charge at 1.99/minute.

Here's that old paintball game:
