No Sound in Descent 1

I can't hear any sound or music in Descent 1! What could be the problem? I'm playing Descent 1 in Windows 98, but I also have XP installed. Could that have something to do with it? Please help.

run setup.exe in your descent directory and manually configure your soundcard....no directx to do it for you automatically in Descent 1/2

Well, the thing is, the computer Descent's installed on has an embedded sound thingy that emulates Sound Blaster, but it doesn't seem to be working.
