\"We can't fight terror. Terrorism is a strategy, not a way of life. You can't fight strategy. Who you need to fight are the people who are using terror against us.\"

Pretty good response to the War on Terror.

\"After every \"victory\" you have more enemies\" -J. Winterson

\"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger.\"
-- Herman Goering, Nazi Reichsmarshall and Luftwaffe-Chief, at the Nuremberg trials. He commited suicide hours before he was to be executed by hanging for \"war crimes\".

I had a nice quote about the people that are to saving destruction often becoming the destructors due to their own greed, but I can't find it right now.

Yes, I've been saying that on this forum a few times. (not the quote, but the context).
And also note that terror isn't even a strategy. It's a continuous occurance that cannot be removed from life.

But I do find it laughable that someone (like Will) will call it a War on Terrorism, and say that we should terrorise an entire country to neutralise it.

Dakatsu your quote is sort of a red herring because, although the catch phrase used is \"War on Terror\",
the targets of the \"war\" are those islamo-facsists who use terrorism against us.
And everyone who has been paying attention knows we haven't harmed one single noun in the process!

So before you get your semantic jihad mojo all worked up
and declare a fatwa against all forms of connotative meaning please enjoy some of these fine quotes all of them from one of my favorite speakers.

The first reminds me of this thread:

\"When the eagles are silent, the parrots begin to jabber.\"

The second reminds me of some typical jabbering of late:

\"Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened.\"

And this one makes me wonder if history isn't about to repeat itself since so many on the left are doing their best Neville Chamberlain impersonation.

\"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile - hoping it will eat him last.\"

And the last one always gives me hope when the the jabbering has worn me down because I know the youth hardly ever find the time to vote.

\"If a man reaches the age of 20 and he's not a socialist he has no heart. If by the time he's 30 and he's still a socialist he has no brain.\"

The speaker was Winston Churchill and we could sure use him today!

No, more of I think it should correctly be called \"War on Islamo-Fascists\". I just think it is a pretty funny comeback to the War on Terror catchphrase.

Lets see if I can manage to offend both sides... :)

\"Those that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.\"
-Benjamin Franklin

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing
-Attributed to Edmund Burke

Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter. The statesman who yields to war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events.
-Sir Winston Churchill

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

\"Shut up, you ****ies. War kicks ass.\" -- Maddox

;)

In all seriousness, though, a quote that always seemed very fitting to me was:

\"There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friend.\"

Gooberman wrote:"After every "victory" you have more enemies" -J. Winterson
This is an amusing quote because of its application.

You hear this said a lot about the islamikazis, but it isn't true: they're already as angry as they can get, already fighting with every resource available to them. It doesn't matter how much madder they get: our victories blow up their stuff and men, and they lose power.

On the other hand, this quote is very true of the USA. We're fighting with barely a tithe of our full strength - and we're only doing that because of a victory on their part.

Guess what another "victory" by the other side would bring...

I used to collect quotes. I eventually stopped. In fact, I even deleted my collection. At the time I felt like collecting others quotes was looking for simple answers to questions that really have none.

People have said some really witty things. Hasn't done a lot of good.

Quote one:
Greatness is a transitory experience. It is never consistent. It depends in part upon the myth-making imagination of humankind. The person who experiences greatness must have a feeling for the myth he is in. He must reflect what is projected upon him. And he must have a strong sense of the sardonic. This is what uncouples him from belief in his own pretensions. The sardonic is all that permits him to move within himself. Without this quality, even occasional greatness will destroy a man.

Quote two:
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans in the finite space of a planetary ecosystem as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who do survive.

Both by Frank Herbert in his novel, DUNE
