This morning I went through the usually mundane list of emails that've arrived over the weekend. One stood out quite spectacularly, and relates to our CRM tool, written by one of our IT managers - believe it or not.

Here's the content:

I find it funny that it appears they either had no time or knowledge to type, yet they took the time to get the 1/2 character in there.

Does it really take that much time to hold down the alternate key while hitting 171 on the number pad? :P

You're assuming that a majority of people, and especially this person (who obviously shows his competence isn't at its peak) knows what that is. Or you're assuming that he (and other people) memorize alt+chars. If so, this the email isn't funny to me.

Um... there's actually a more likely explanation for that.

The sender probably uses MS Outlook, which I believe uses an embedded Word document to compose e-mails with - and it will automatically convert \"1/2\" into \"½\", if set up to do so.

Reminds me of when my colleague was adding his comments on my code review one tiring night. German is his first language, and halfway through the comment the language switched from English to German!
