When Will nVidia Catch Up?

Post by Iceman »

I recently bought an nVidia GeForce FX 5950 Ultra / 256 for a box at work and I am really disappointed. It seems there is no support with the latest driver (56.72) for any of the (now) common GL shader extensions ... specifically GL_ARB_shadre_objects, GL_ARB_vertex_shader, GL_ARB_fragment_shader, GL_ARB_shading_language_100.

Any idea of nVidia's plans to catch up with the latest technology? It seems that ATI has no problem doing so ...

That or wait for the midrange versions of it, they are still likely to destroy the 9800 XT and 5950 Ultra in benchmarks.

It sounds like he's concerned with software support, rather then the hardware itself.

GL_ARB_shadre_objects
The 5950 doesn't support the UK equivalents. :P

I looked through both of those articles Krom. It sure looks nice but THERE IS NO REFERENCE WHATSOEVER TO ANY OPENGL ACCELERATION OR EXTENSIONS. It speaks of Shader 3.0 (Dx9c) but makes no mention of the OpenGL shader extensions. I certainly hope that nVidia won't (and I doubt they would) drop support for OpenGL.

^^^ What Mr. Perfect said ...

nVidia is far superior to ATi in OpenGL (the latest driver came w/ an upgrade to OGL 1.5 and it's still present in 60.72 (supports the 6800)). I seriousely doubt that nVidia will drop OGL support -- 1. OpenGL plays a big role in nVidias workstation products and 2. nVidia is elected member of the OpenGL architecture review board -- pretty much the driving force behind OGL..

I understand that but the fact remains that they do not support GL_ARB_shader_objects, GL_ARB_vertex_shader, GL_ARB_fragment_shader, and GL_ARB_shading_language. ATI does ...

... ARB = Architecture Review Board ...

i assume you're talking about 96/800s right ice?

I'd like to ask when those extensions where ratified.
