Did you contact your mobile phone provider and make sure they are not blocking anything?
Why doesn't it work?

yeah i called verizon. no help. the people that work there arent educated enouph. i reloaded my phone with software version 1.5, then updated to 2.1. i dont understand, it worked before. i guess ill just have to do some trial and error. i mean i love the android os, but the htc hardware is getting in the way. should i just buy a new phone? like the htc incredibal? i have the eris now.

There's no guarantee that buying a new phone will solve the problem... if you could temporarily try someone else's, that's a different story. Either way it works best to figure out the problem. Somehow.

It sounds like Verizon may be blocking ports.

I'm on Sprint with a Palm Pre and no issues tethering with gaming/Hulu'ing.

What app are you using to tether? If your using PDAnet are you using the paid version, since I know the free version after 30 days blocks https sites.
