There was a story about this sort of thing happening in Cali recently, including heavy use of DDT & other 'cides long-banned in the US.

It really bothers me that there are so many people in this country creating the demand for these drugs. You would hope that people cared more about what they were doing to themselves and others.

De-criminalize the use.
Tax the production to help cover the cost of treatment since you'll be saving on building and staffing prisons and reducing the cost of maintaining courts and police departments. Those things together will cause the budget to be flush to cover the new treatment programs.
That way you have authority to regulate the producers/growers so you can protect the environment.

Then of course they can bribe politicians with donations in exchange for exemptions from the laws regarding the environmental impact of their legal operation so at least that way the environment is legally screwed up by the process instead of being screwed up by criminals....lol

Ban one substance and users/addicts or kids will just find something else to get high off of, even if it kills them.

erroneous article.

Yeah, lets make things like \"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds\" legal so we can watch people try to fly off buildings.

What do a lot of people do when they see authority saying \"dont do this\" to something that isnt inherently wrong? They do it.

What happens when authorities make something illegal that a ton of people want? It goes underground.

What happens when it goes underground? Drug wars, dangerous substances introduced, questionable quality of the illegal goods. Damn, youd think we woulda learned about all this from the great puritan experiment when they implemented prohibition way back when.

Whats the solution? Legalize it, regulate it, and tax it.

Whats the difference between moonshine and the booze youve got in your fridge? With moonshine you never really knew what was in it, the proceeds often went to gangsters, and it tasted like crap. The booze youve got has a constant formula that by law has to be safe for consumption in moderation, the taxes help the government pay for stuff, none of the profits benefit the mafia or drug lords, and its engineered to taste decent, depending on how expensive it was.

I've seen studies stating that European countries which have much looser societal restrictions on underage drinking (like Germany or Italy, for instance) tend to have significantly lesser rates of teenage alcohol abuse. It's sort of the same principle here. That allure of the forbidden is what causes many people to get into these substances in the first place...if you mitigate that allure, you'll wind up with fewer drug problems in the long run. I used to be rather anti-pot myself for whatever reason, but I eventually realized that the stuff is way less harmful than alcohol on a societal level and just creates a bunch of "criminals" in the legal system that aren't any threat to anyone.

Since we're on a slight detour from the op...

I generally don't like hanging out with people who drink anymore. None of my friends do drugs or drink, so I'm pretty lucky. I used to have friends that like to get drunk and it's pretty much turned me off from that sort of stuff. I'm boring and proud of it.

I have always wondered WHY people seek ways to get high in the first place. I have never once in my life wanted to be \"out of it\" or \"high\" for 'fun.'

There is certainly a place for certain drugs like putting you out for surgery or for pain management UNDER a doctors' care- but never for 'recreation.'

I've tried the \"doctor's\" normal way of dealing with pain and the ONLY, ONLY way I've survived through all the migraines that have plagued me the last 12 years has been self-medication with caffeine and acetaminophen. If marijuana was legal, I'd try that out of desperation for pain relief, NOT pleasure or to just get high. But oh no, we got all these moralists in this country that want to \"ban\" drugs that aren't on some doctor approved patented pharmaceutical list and that may have some benefit to people other than getting pleasure from it.

Tunnelcat, don't you live in Oregon? Isn't that a medical marijuana state? Also, be careful with acetaminophen--you probably already know this, but repeatedly going over the recommended dose can trash your liver.

yes it is. in fact my Son-inlaws Father has a medical Marijuana card and grows his own plants. but I guess it easier for TC to blame the "Moralist's" than to know the laws in her own state. it's also an assisted suicide state

Just as a fun FYI, some anthropologists believe that the first human settlements were established to help expedite the raising of grain for brewing beer. We literally have booze to thank for civilization itself. :P

unless you're a religious fanatic, you've had a drink already.

Yes, but did I use them to get drunk?

I have never been in such a state, nor would I ever seek it. Next you would have asked if I ever drank a coffee or soda.

The point is, I have never sought an \"altered\" state of mind from these things while others seem to.
