Disk wipe software

Post by CDN_Merlin »

Hey, I'm trying to DSX my old hard drivers and none of the programs that were listed in the "Free Software" work. For some reason Eraser gives me errors when I try to run it on my drives. These are old IDE drives that I'm selling but I want to make sure no one can recover the info. I've googled software but I want a simple Windows interface that I can just tell it what drive to wipe and that's it.

Anyone?

CCleaner... you can delete everything and wipe to your heart's content with drive sweeper... no spyware plus it's free;

Oodles of features in a small package.

(Edit: How's that for service?)

Its been a while since I have used CCleaner, but what things are now in it that makes it a good program, it always seemed to cause problems for me, what features do you use or not use in it?

I have always liked EASEUS Partition Manager.

Its free and can expand/contract/partiton drives in addition to destroying data.

i have found the disk wiper on UBCD 4 works wonders! gives you DOD Level Wiping options and can wipe a disk with or without partition limitations.

You would be surprised how effective the shielding on a hard drive is.

Unix coreutils, what else:

dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda (or sdb or sdc or whatever)

Repeat as many times as your feel necessary.

Doesn't work unless you have a UNIX/LINUX based system. I used CCLeaner and it worked fine.

Sadly someone only offered my $65 for my old system. I'd like a bit more. Yes I know there is no PS or case but it should be at elast worth $100.

There are lots of linux/unix boot cd/flash images out there that'll get you there.

Okay I won't be too annoying about the linux thing. I've learned that there are a lot of quality utilities out there that come with something like an ubuntu boot CD that have to be collected individually on windows based PC's. I had turned to Linux boot CD's for disk management utilities (partition control, disk cloning, etc) before I became a full-time Linux user.
