Creating illusion

I was playing level 14 of Vertigo and there were 2 panels that, when shot, gave the message "Creating Illusion!" which I don't think I've seen in any other levels. Does anyone know what exactly they do?

I believe it makes you able to fly through a certain wall as if its not there. The actual wall texture stays, and robots and projectiles are able to pass through as well

As far as I remember that message might not display properly in any version of the game besides XL?
I remember on a mod level where it was used (one of the Project Mandrill maps I think) the message didn't display in vanilla or rebirth. But the triggers still work.
In vertigo 14, as far as I remember, I think it gives you a trippy little shortcut back to the main room. Like, the wall's made of rock on one side and water rapids on the other.
