I had chatgp summarize that wall of text into bullet points:
chatgpt wrote:
  • Oregon, 1970: 45-foot sperm whale washes ashore
  • Locals warned to stay away due to dangers
  • Oregon State Highway Division called to dispose of whale
  • Whale exploded using half a ton of TNT, causes massive explosion
  • Main character, Alan, hears about whale at school, friends plan adventure
  • Father works for local government, provides updates on whale situation
  • Alan agrees to sneak out with friend Harvey to see whale
  • Alan hides camera, prepares for late-night adventure
  • Sneaks out, meets Harvey, and they bike to whale location
  • They hide bikes and use flashlights to reach the beach
  • Encounter mysterious men discussing "new species"
  • They approach whale; Harvey wants pictures of himself with it
  • Men run back, yelling for them to get away
  • Whale's tongue grabs and swallows Harvey and one man
  • Alan escapes, returns home; camera found and returned without film
  • Whale blown up; no trace of Harvey found

Yeah, but Goodwin's version is more entertaining. So maybe I've found the Achilles Heel of chatGP. It can't write an engaging story for human consumption. It's dry and contains only the essential facts. No emotion whatsoever.

My post isn't a good example of ChatGPT writing an engaging story. I asked it to summarize using short sentences and bullet points. But yeah, I don't think it would write an engaging story better than a human.
