A new comp finally got to the top of the familys priority list, i get the bloody thing all set up, wait for the kids to install their icq and crap, get bored then go to bed leaving me to install Descent again, after a couple of years going through withdrawals.......I slowly go through the installation process again, savouring every tableau....remembering all the good times.....

.....only to find my sidewinder ppro is too friggin old to play....agggghhhhhhhh. I am so shagged off.

I'm using a precision pro on my computer right now. Granted I'm using it over USB since my system has lacked a gameport for several years now.

Speaking as an absolute ignoramus how can you use a ppro with usb...is there an adaptor of some kind 'cause mine has a plug on the end of it the size of Cambodia.

....did i just ask a really daft question there?

there should be an adapter in the box.

You could plop an old PCI sound card and disable all functions but the gameport, as I did.

TheCyborg sticks are good. They still have twist with them. Also Logitech makes a couple of good sticks that work well with descent.

I still have my Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro 2. And no broken hat switch ;)

It depends on whether you got the USB-compatible version (unlike me, who got it before the USB version was released) or not.

Take a look at this page and the serial number to see if it's the USB-compatible version. If it's not, take the other advice, and install a cheap PCI sound card with a gameport (that's what I did, too).

I'll do that after work, thanx guys. BTW could there be any problem putting in an old sound card on a new machine, would it intefere with the new sound card? I don't want the box blowing up, th kids'll kill me.

As I said, I did it and I've had no problems. You can disable it under device management, so that only the gameport is active.

I didn't have any problems doing it, either. The only issue I came across was XP re-activating a couple of the sound card functions on reboot, but that wasn't too hard to solve, and it didn't cause any problems anyway.

Good luck!

I hate computors. Screwed the new one up somehow so had to do a reformat and everythings working perfectly now. Well...it was working perfectly..... after downloading all the patches and shmatches and vortex and shmortex i entered a game on a german server only to break my primary trigger on me sidewinder. BAITCHHHH!!!!

So now i'm playing with the secondary button configured to primary and the hat configured to secondaries which is a bit confusing at times (if you have better ideas let me know), but it's still fun...which is the main thing.

Thanx to Bess and Thunderbunny for whooping my bottie this aftenoon (i think at one point they were going easy on me for a bit which was a tad embarrassing)

I'm using a Logitech extreme 3dpro which works pretty well. Its a shame they don't make the precision 2s any more. Any way, once ya get back in game again, I'd love to play a little Gladius. (one of my favorites)
