Wow, I REALLY hate Windows XP
Wow, I REALLY hate Windows XP
I just upgraded my CPU and motherboard and as a result had to re-enter my cd key. After that windows tells me it has reached its maximum activation number or whatever. So then I had to call the phone number and tell a computer the 35 digit length ID number only to have it tell me "I'm sorry, I have no record of that number". Then I talk to a rep from india and give the first 6 digits of that number to him so that he can give me another 35 digit number to enter in!
What a waste of time! I will need to reinstall soon as well and will have to do this all over again. Are there any key generators out there so I can skip this? This is rediculous. What a joke.
(Don't answer that question by the way)
Well, there's my vent of the evening. Anyone else had to do this?

If you are good with the internet (and I know you are) you can very easily eliminate the product activation and use fliptw's website to update your Windows.
and ... not that i am speaking from ALOT of experience or anything, but the auto-update function still works fine without legit key, even if you can't use the 'windows update' website. turn on the 'auto update' and wait for the three or four reboots and turn it off again. just watch for update news.
lord, now i remember why i went linux.

Actually, disabling the add-on DOES work. I actually had to do that on a machine with a LEGIT key because some dork stole it and spread it around.Top Wop wrote:Doesnt work.ccb056 wrote:People have win xp corperate with generated keys just disable the activex app in IE to get the updates

fyre,
you're right if the OS is your toy. For me, it's a tool, and I don't like tools that tend to hurt me more than do what they're supposed to.

Well from a developer! It took me almost a week to get the makefile generation to work, and I had needed help. To install a gfx driver, I need to unload the X manager, d/l the source, install the kernel source, compile a new kernel and re-configure the X manager. KDevelop is broken on openSuse 10, even patched (I'd have to manually d/l, compile and install it). This means I do not have a windowed IDE Ã la Visual Studio with a nice debugger making my life easier. I still haven't figured how to modify the configure.ac to change the target name to d2x-xl ...fyrephlie wrote:this from a developer...
Pffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff!
So far, Linux has only hindered my productivity.
I don't want to mess around with OS and system stuff if I want to get something to run on that OS.
I like things that work.

Or do you want to fix the engine, change the tires, and use a half-broken steering wheel in your car to lets say buy construction material for a house you're just building? You don't.

grafix issue is indicitive of openSUSE 10.0 ... but if you update your repositories in YaST you could get it in a heart beat... oh and Novell now offers it as an update from their OSS repositories....Diedel wrote:Well from a developer! yeah linux is a pain to get setup if you let MS hold your hand all your life, but once you get it ... oh man you get it and never go back.
learning new stuff is hard for some people

Re: Wow, I REALLY hate Windows XP
I hate to say it, but activation is one of the major reasons I never purchased* XP. I would have absolutly no patience for what you just did. Probably would have just Fdisked the sucker, installed 2000, and struggled on untill Vista while bearing the horrible pain of rebooting after making changes to the network settings.Xamindar wrote:Well, there's my vent of the evening. *Notice I said "purchased". Unless you can find me a $90 legit version of XP Corporate for sale, don't bother me.

Heh, I told you to just ask... I won't say that Linux is perfect, or "easier" than Windows, but like fyrephlie said, Once you get it, you get it. I did have some issues with 10.0 doing weird stuff, but I've been running 9.1 for a few years with very few issues. I may try 9.3 and see if it's any "smoother" than 10.0 as far as things working out the box.

Linux is my main OS, not because it's "cool" but because it is more usefull and stable than windows is for me. I have a linux server that's been up for two months now ( I have friends with linux servers that have ben up for a over a year), windows would be chuggin by now.
But to each his own. If you don't have the time to learn it or don't even care to that's your choice. I choose stability and configurability.

Not unless you consider having a fully working operating system to be optional.Xamindar wrote:What a waste of time!
Why? Are you that confident you can ruin an XP installation is such a short time? o_OXamindar wrote:I will need to reinstall soon as well and will have to do this all over again.
Yes, but they work poorly, requiring many days to produce a handful of keys that might, or might not, work - much like your brain.Xamindar wrote:Are there any key generators out there so I can skip this?
The word is RIDICULOUS there is no letter "e" in it. Also, it's not even pronounced with an "e" for goodness sake!Xamindar wrote:This is rediculous. What a joke.
If you think it's a joke, you have a badly defined sense of homour. Suggest you get one, and a life, and stop grizzling like a whiney little 12 year old!
So you are saying after a year it is reset? Thinking back I must have reinstalled two times on this machine. I also installed it onto my old athlon 800 and dual booted it with linux for a short time just to see how it ran with a Voodoo 5 (terrible by the way). But that doesn't surprise me as 3dfx is out of business and don't release drivers for XP. So that probably counted as one.BUBBALOU wrote:the maximum reactivations (based on major hardware changes) is 4X's per year. Also 3 cold reactivations in a 30 day period if the hardware crc is the same. or any combination of the above.
On a side note, the reason I mentioned wanting to reinstall soon is because Diablo II will not run any more. Strange, but it gives me some goofy error when trying to open the program ever sense the latest patch came out. I reinstalled the nvidia drivers and even Diablo II but no go.

You're trying to argue with me w/o having read all of my posts? You're giving me a laugh. But that Linux even has problems with a peanut like linebreaks is kind of amusing.Xamindar wrote:Diedel wrote: You just don't get it. me i despise windows (although xp is stablest of all so far). i LIKE the IDEA of linux but there's too many different flavors and builds and this one is compatible with that one but not that other one.
first time i tried it was with a commercial version. i figured ok, they've got the bugs out and i don't have to worry about too much. got done with the install and the display was 50% off center and i tried for 2 days looking in the man files to find out how to fix it (don't bother telling me how to now). never found out how. flushed it off my machine and never went back.
x2 what diedel said.
i gotta USE this machine for work. as i've gotten older the less i want to mess around with the innards of stuff i need for day to day living. i don't want to reprogram my coffee maker every time i want to try a new kind of coffee and i don't want to recompile my operating system kernel cause i need to install a new program.

wine ... winex / cedega are incredible for gaming under linux. so was loki games when they were still around, but sadly a lot of stuff just doesnt work under linux yet.Nosferatu wrote:.cough.http://frankscorner.org/.cough.fyrephlie wrote:or become obsessed with the configureability and beauty of linux, hating only the lack of gaming...Diedel wrote:Try Linux and fall in love with Windoze all over again.
![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_sad.gif)
the amount of work it take for linux to do what you want it to do depends entirely on what you are trying to do.
i use it for work, hell, my last job i used knoppix (a live cd!) for everything and just booted right past windows. i find that i get plenty done.
but linux is a to each their own sort of thing. i think its sad tho, that a lot of people just become inundated on their first try and give up. its kinda like learning to ride a bike. i recommend to most users that they keep windows around, get familiar with linux doing day to day stuff, and expand from there. i don't ever suggest someone just jump into linux without a safety net.
p.s. for those that hate constant reboots and crashes.....
this is my iptime on this machine, which i do a LOT of stuff with:
Code: Select all
6:04pm up 31 days 7:59, 2 users, load average: 0.10, 0.33, 0.24

My 2k server has been up for 1 year steady before I rebooted it for a driver update. Hosts SQLServer, IIS and files.Xamindar wrote:I have a linux server that's been up for two months now ( I have friends with linux servers that have ben up for a over a year), windows would be chuggin by now.
It's the user, not the OS, that causes problems.
![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
I guess that's true. Security is mostly the user's responsability. If you can't keep it clean then you aren't a very good admin.Testiculese wrote: It's the user, not the OS, that causes problems.
I once worked at a place with the main development server running nt4. Almost every morning we would have to reboot it because the print spooler would crash (no printers any more). We all hated windows at that place even though we were developing software for windows.
![Wink ](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
well if you updated a driver in linux you wouldn't have needed to reboot. i love win2k, still use it on 2 boxes, but hated that i would need to reboot for any change i made (even if i sneezed it seemed).Testiculese wrote:My 2k server has been up for 1 year steady before I rebooted it for a driver update. no, it is more like learning to ride a bike, then learning to drive a car.Diedel wrote:I found it like already knowing how to ride a bike and being told to learn it all over again.
i hated nt4 with a passion. couldn't fathom how microsoft managed to convince so many that is was such a wonderful system, short of the fact that it had a pretty gui. but that is why they moved on and improved.Xamindar wrote:I once worked at a place with the main development server running nt4. P.S. I still have my windows nt 4 workstation disc lol I ran it on a toshiba tecra laptop with a pentium 133, because 95's constant bsod was hitting about every 15 minutes. nt4 was great for its time i suppose...
