Using shader programs in Descent 1/2 is possible, but not with the Rebirth code base.
A better approach would be to add an entirely new renderer as well as a modern physics and networking library. Again, you'd need a better code base than Rebirth though.

Sirius, The screen shots appear darker than the in-game impression, trust me. Above that in multiplayer people usually use bright player ships, so they will actually stand out better.

not sure why you went through some trouble to change them to D2-XL only levels, because I've made some changes to my six levels including lighting issues, item balance and yes that fuel center issue you brought up in level 3. Unreal has a glow filter, D2X-XL coronas are hacked, pseudo-volumetric lights. Simple glow is not what I wanted to go for. Actually full, per pixel volumetric light is what I want (but not with that engine).

Is it correct that you have been using standard lighting for your screenshots, and have turned colored lighting off? And have you been using the old or the new render path?
