You'd be surprised how easy it is to get D2 running on your XP machine if you follow the 3 steps on the Rangers homepage. Up and Running in 10 minutes - literally.

And you can get a manhattan \"gameport to USB\" device for $19 and use your old Sidewinder.

I agree with the others - Rebirth blows Diedel's DLX-XL2-LX (or whatever the ignorant name is) out of the water. There's no comparison between the two. a buggy poor attempt -vs- Rebirth, a solid playing game.

For D2 I do not use any of the base buttons.

Both side buttons work and the two top buttons work (hat and long button). That is all I need for D2 from my joystick - the rest is keyboard - It works perfectly and even twists! Not bad for $19.

If you are playing the new rebirth D2 and you want to use your old sidewinder Pro, you need to get a Manhattan gameport to USB device. It works perfectly for your sidewinder and I picked mine up for only $19. It even has twist!

You are right, DLE-XP being pretty much it is a big-time bummer for us old level builders. I don't run the D2X-XL version of D2 either. I've also found it to be riddled with bugs, and I believe it also damaged my video card and display.

I've started playing D2 again and fortunately I was able to find my pilot file from back in 1995 on an old CD backup.

I thought I remembered there was a command that you could enter in multi that would give you your lifetime pilot stats (kills / Deaths / percentages) etc...but I can't remember it ...
