You probably thought it was some spin-off from Arpanet, and was built around email but the truth is somewhat different: The Internet was invented to store and distribute Porn. The Excess storage and bandwidth capacity of the pornographers was then used to host domains which did not contain porn.

Up until about 3 years ago, the only thing which would have taken down the Internet, would have been the simultaneous withdrawl of all the Porn, and all the supporting hardware for it. Now it isn't true any more - but the bandwidth demands of Porn still grow, and are still fuelling the increase in bandwidth.

Porn is now, and forever will be a driving force in the Internet world, and despite the appalling quality of 99.9% of porn, there is still some genuinely great porn out there. It's just not easy to find. One day it will be though, and that's when the never ending stream of useless porn will stop - and finally, we'll just be left with the good pron.
