What happens when people debate something like this? It takes forever and almost nobody (if any) are convinced. Instead of four (or however many >_>) pages it would be 20 pages long and turn into a flame war.

Ferno, why would you just show one photograph as evidence without even knowing anything about it? It also doesn't match the dimensions of the moon and the ball earth and the distances don't match up with NASA's moon fly-by orbiting earth. It looks like someone was thinking too much about the moon over the earth and just reversed it, something I didn't think of until recently when I started getting into flat earth.

If you stitch together a bunch of snapshots covering the entire lunar phase from earth it becomes totally obvious the moon is a sphere.

I've spoken to many flat earthers, and in general I would not characterize them as stupid, but rather deluded. The appeal of believing in conspiracy theories is feeling like you are one of the few 'enlightened' people who know the secret truth that the masses don't, and that the powers that be are suppressing. The more outrageous and implausible the conspiracy, the more special they feel for believing in it. A lot of them also have religious motivations (even though, ironically, Eric Dubay, who is effectively the founder of the modern flat earth movement, is actually an anti-theist who hates Christianity).

I've also heard some people espouse a competing conspiracy theory - most, if not all, of the modern flat earthers are actually atheist trolls trying to make Christians look ridiculous. I recall one guy who actually did a thorough amount of research on early Christian theology and the writings of the church fathers in the first few centuries AD who helped compile the Bible as we know it today, and showed a lot of evidence that demonstrated, fairly convincingly, that none of them believed the Earth was flat. His conclusion, though, went off the rails into 'therefore, no real Christian believes in a flat earth, so it's an atheist conspiracy to discredit Christians and creationism'.
