I'm with Cuda and Xam on this one... Vista can suck it. I'm running the same 3D desktop that Xam is (Compiz using Xgl in Linux) and I freaking love it. Oh, it runs smoothly on 512MB of Ram (SDRAM at that!) and a Geforce MX4000 card... and can still run games with NO performance hit in another X sess...

I still have a copy, I played it last year for fun. Mostly I just ripped off the audio taunts from it, cause they're so funny. It's not a horrible game, though the graphics tend to give me a headache after an hour or so... I don't know why it never caught on. The customizable onboard computer was a ...

I've used BlackBox for Windows before.... heck, I've used it in Linux, too. It's fantastic in Windows, makes everything much faster and better looking, IMO. I also had problems running some things in dualview, though it was mostly in Linux. For the most part, I wound up just playing games in a windo...

If you're not experienced with Linux, I'd recommend Debian, Fedora, or Suse (all package-based distros) for ease of setup, stability, and updating. All versions of Linux support SMP, and (almost) all come with the standard network services, i.e. DNS, FTP, HTTP, PHP, SQL, SMTP, and so on. I'm partial...

Heck, it took me 6 months to put together a simple Howto for installing Linux D3 with Windows CD's... and it was only about an 8 hour day's work! Yeah, I had a hurricane slow me down, but man, stuff happens. I'm all about supporting game developers, especially when they're building something as cool...

I can't wait to hear how it works for you. Every person who uses this gives me more reason to keep doing stuff like this. I think the Descent community is one of the oldest, best, and most talented gaming groups. You guys constantly remind me of this, and guys like Munk, TopGun, Deidel, Do_Checkor, ...

That's weird. I'm guessing you installed the dedi server on a different machine? Where did you copy over the mn3 files from? Not trying to be a pest, I'm just curious. All I did was install the rpm file, and copy over d3.hog and fury.mn3 and nothing else. I also made sure the files were all a+rx per...

I got mine working without any trouble. What error message does it give you when you try to connect? What distro are you using? I'm totally stoked, I'm thinking about building a machine now with a stripped down install, and the Linux Dedi server. It'd only be about 500MB for the game, and about the ...

The SOD is basically a Java backend that listens and then launches the server as needed. I don't think it can force the Linux server to run on a different port (as the executable doesn't support it with command line switches), unless it does internal port redirecting. I'm somewhat interested in it, ...

I just downloaded the 1.4 server patch from www.descent3.com Basically, it's a stripped-down install of Linux D3, and I was surprised to see it includes most of the files I put into my Linux client package. According to the readme, it's basically a functional server-only install, minus the movies, l...

The main reason people use the Windows version is that you can specify which port to use, and thusly run more than one server on a machine. However, with the God-given talent that is Munk's Checksum Workaround, I'm thinking a Linux dedi server isn't such a bad idea. You could even write a script tha...

I can't tell you how happy I am to be able to help the Descent community. I'll probably run through the Howto once before I consider it final. Did you run across anything that was confusing? Seriously, even if it's something stupid, I'd like to know. I *know* it wasn't perfect... :) Welcome to the D...
